Camelia Mirescu is a multidisciplinary artist based in Italy. Romanian by birth, she lives and works in Rome since 1990. A polyhedral artist, Mirescu’s work manage to shape her artistic sensibility and creative abilities in a refined “modus operandi” immersed in a poetic mood, with skillful research in a variety of expressive modes in painting, photography, installations, ceramics, in her thoughts written between poetry, essay written, narrative  and as videomaker in experimental film and video art.

Her art has been featured in numerous prestigious events, including solo and major group exhibitions of national and international importance, at public and private institutions, including:

CAMELIA MIRESCU. FRAGMENTOS  ILUMINADOS.

La obra videográfica de Camelia Mirescu se inscribe en el actual panorama audiovisual con un discurso que hace propio la cita del escritor Peter Handke permitiendo a través de sus piezas fílmicas “ocultarse y mostrarse” para ser , “permanecer y pasar” para hacer visible la experiencia que deviene de la captación de la realidad y de la condición humana, en su interacción con la vitalidad que componen los elementos de la naturaleza, lo que constituye la materia que articula en sus múltiples enfoques el sentido a sus trabajos.

Es sin dudas un proceso que propone siempre un pasaje, un recorrido inestable que conduce a un lugar donde abundan los interrogantes. Es allí donde se pueden desentrañar algunos de los tópicos que componen su obra: la contumaz obsesión que la moviliza, y que se percibe en su interés por el tiempo en su materialidad/inmaterialidad, en  su reflejo poético de incripción en la naturaleza , fundamentalmente en el agua, líquido que es presencia vital y constitutiva en gran parte de sus trabajos.

Las imágenes de Camelia Mirescu y sus metáforas están construidas de retazos, de microscópicos virajes, de superposiciones y transiciones; aluden tanto a la volatilidad del tiempo como a fragmentarios recuerdos extraidos de la memoria e inscritos en la naturaleza.

La música no es sólo un elemento decorativo o superfluo en sus videos, sino que su colaboración con artistas sonoros es concebida como una profunda comunión con las imágenes, donde ella logra conjugarla con delicado equibrio y sensibilidad para que pueda penetrar en el misterioso territorio que suscita su lente.

En los trabajos que propone Camelia Mirescu se pone en juego un corpus de imágenes que constituyen un universo propio, fluido, disruptivo, dinámico,fluctuante; rico microcosmos donde fluyen las concepciones expresivas, estéticas y discursivas de la autora.

Eliding prosaic linearity’s well-worn pathways, Camelia Mirescu’s moving images more closely align with the poetic/‘vertical’ arrangements of visual ideas championed by the pioneering experimental filmmaker, Maya Deren.  The subjects of Mirescu’s lens are concrete, almost elemental: earth, water, air, fire.  This base materiality is a vital component of her vision, perhaps no more meaningfully so than when, through artful superimpositions and a luminous choreography of color and motion, her work’s visual rhythms and harmonies render them variably abstract. Indeed, it is in this dance of perceived surfaces and implicit depths that the moment-to-moment intensity of Mirescu’s densely layered impressions resonates most powerfully.

Camelia Mirescu’s moving images are alive in ways that too few works of moving image art are. Her works are brief yet immersive. We move through them as if inhabiting a dream, and at times the vacillating images seem to breathe and undulate, shift and writhe. This is visual alchemy at its most tantalizingly elusive. Through series of seductive, miasmic transpositions, once material subjects are rendered ethereal, leaving behind spectral traces like ghosts or memories (or, perhaps, the ghosts of memories). 

Associative rather than indexical, Camelia Mirescu’s moving images facilitate the birthing of new ideas through a form of montage through superimposition that is at once intellectual and emotional.  These emergent sensations and dispositions, like the evocative images that give rise to them, linger with the stubborn, melancholic poignancy of half-remembered dreams before, at last, surrendering to new geometries of light and color.

In short, Camelia Mirescu’s moving images constitute a contemplative cinema of reverie and affect. In the most expansive sense of the term, Mirescu’s works are ‘fugitive visions’: lyrical, nomadic, ephemeral.  Imbued with a seductive, almost hypnotic alterity, her moving images are, in their very immanence, quintessentially cinematic.

…Nostalgia la cui radice etimologica «nostos» diventa la chiave di volta per approcciarsi alla visione: Nostoi era infatti un poema (ahinoi quasi del tutto perduto) che raccontava il viaggio di ritorno a casa degli eroi della Guerra di Troia e metteva al cento il pertinace desiderio di ricongiungersi con la patria perduta. Sono molte le immagini di viaggio, nel film di Camelia Mirescu, che si apre non a caso con l’arrivo di un treno in una stazione senza nome, memoria cinematografica archetipica. Trasfigurato in un bianconero capace di aprirsi al colore in un breve, suggestivo istante, il cortometraggio assume i contorni indefiniti di un cammino della/nella memoria.

Camelia Mirescu is a multidisciplinary artist based in Italy. Romanian by birth, she lives and works in Rome since 1990. A polyhedral artist, Mirescu’s work manage to shape her artistic sensibility and creative abilities in a refined “modus operandi” immersed in a poetic mood, with skillful research in a variety of expressive modes in painting, photography, installations, ceramics, in her thoughts written between poetry, essay written, narrative  and as videomaker in experimental film and video art.

CAMELIA MIRESCU. FRAGMENTOS  ILUMINADOS.

La obra videográfica de Camelia Mirescu se inscribe en el actual panorama audiovisual con un discurso que hace propio la cita del escritor Peter Handke permitiendo a través de sus piezas fílmicas “ocultarse y mostrarse” para ser , “permanecer y pasar” para hacer visible la experiencia que deviene de la captación de la realidad y de la condición humana, en su interacción con la vitalidad que componen los elementos de la naturaleza, lo que constituye la materia que articula en sus múltiples enfoques el sentido a sus trabajos.

Es sin dudas un proceso que propone siempre un pasaje, un recorrido inestable que conduce a un lugar donde abundan los interrogantes. Es allí donde se pueden desentrañar algunos de los tópicos que componen su obra: la contumaz obsesión que la moviliza, y que se percibe en su interés por el tiempo en su materialidad/inmaterialidad, en  su reflejo poético de incripción en la naturaleza , fundamentalmente en el agua, líquido que es presencia vital y constitutiva en gran parte de sus trabajos.

Las imágenes de Camelia Mirescu y sus metáforas están construidas de retazos, de microscópicos virajes, de superposiciones y transiciones; aluden tanto a la volatilidad del tiempo como a fragmentarios recuerdos extraidos de la memoria e inscritos en la naturaleza.

La música no es sólo un elemento decorativo o superfluo en sus videos, sino que su colaboración con artistas sonoros es concebida como una profunda comunión con las imágenes, donde ella logra conjugarla con delicado equibrio y sensibilidad para que pueda penetrar en el misterioso territorio que suscita su lente.

En los trabajos que propone Camelia Mirescu se pone en juego un corpus de imágenes que constituyen un universo propio, fluido, disruptivo, dinámico,fluctuante; rico microcosmos donde fluyen las concepciones expresivas, estéticas y discursivas de la autora.

Luminous Choreographies: Camelia Mirescu’s Moving Images       

An image – as opposed to a symbol – is indefinite in meaning.

Eliding prosaic linearity’s well-worn pathways, Camelia Mirescu’s moving images more closely align with the poetic/‘vertical’ arrangements of visual ideas championed by the pioneering experimental filmmaker, Maya Deren.  The subjects of Mirescu’s lens are concrete, almost elemental: earth, water, air, fire.  This base materiality is a vital component of her vision, perhaps no more meaningfully so than when, through artful superimpositions and a luminous choreography of color and motion, her work’s visual rhythms and harmonies render them variably abstract. Indeed, it is in this dance of perceived surfaces and implicit depths that the moment-to-moment intensity of Mirescu’s densely layered impressions resonates most powerfully.

Camelia Mirescu’s moving images are alive in ways that too few works of moving image art are. Her works are brief yet immersive. We move through them as if inhabiting a dream, and at times the vacillating images seem to breathe and undulate, shift and writhe. This is visual alchemy at its most tantalizingly elusive. Through series of seductive, miasmic transpositions, once material subjects are rendered ethereal, leaving behind spectral traces like ghosts or memories (or, perhaps, the ghosts of memories). 

Associative rather than indexical, Camelia Mirescu’s moving images facilitate the birthing of new ideas through a form of montage through superimposition that is at once intellectual and emotional.  These emergent sensations and dispositions, like the evocative images that give rise to them, linger with the stubborn, melancholic poignancy of half-remembered dreams before, at last, surrendering to new geometries of light and color.

In short, Camelia Mirescu’s moving images constitute a contemplative cinema of reverie and affect. In the most expansive sense of the term, Mirescu’s works are ‘fugitive visions’: lyrical, nomadic, ephemeral.  Imbued with a seductive, almost hypnotic alterity, her moving images are, in their very immanence, quintessentially cinematic.

Nostalgia di un ritorno – Trasmigrazioni Emotive, Retrospettiva cinema sperimentale di Camelia Mirescu, 2016    

…Nostalgia la cui radice etimologica «nostos» diventa la chiave di volta per approcciarsi alla visione: Nostoi era infatti un poema (ahinoi quasi del tutto perduto) che raccontava il viaggio di ritorno a casa degli eroi della Guerra di Troia e metteva al cento il pertinace desiderio di ricongiungersi con la patria perduta. Sono molte le immagini di viaggio, nel film di Camelia Mirescu, che si apre non a caso con l’arrivo di un treno in una stazione senza nome, memoria cinematografica archetipica. Trasfigurato in un bianconero capace di aprirsi al colore in un breve, suggestivo istante, il cortometraggio assume i contorni indefiniti di un cammino della/nella memoria.
